Get To Know Me

Janine Jellars About Me

I started reading at age 4 and fell in love with the transformative power of storytelling. Throughout my childhood and teens, I always had a book in hand, and used my active imagination to pen short stories and poems. Fast forward to now, and I am the author of two books. The Big South African Hair Book (2021), a non-fiction title, is my love letter to the South African natural hair community. When The Filter Fades (2023) is my debut novel, a glimpse into fame and influence in Johannesburg.

Outside of my love for reading, and writing, I use my narrative abilities to craft captivating content for global and South African brands. As a seasoned content and digital marketer, my role is to solve strategic problems for organisations using the power of storytelling.

I grew up in Cape Town, and acquired Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) degrees at Stellenbosch University, but I now call Johannesburg my home. Self-development is vital to me, and as I’ve grown as a leader and a brand marketing expert, I added to my knowledge by graduating with a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from the Gordon Institute of Business Science (University of Pretoria) in 2023.

My top 5 career highlights (so far):

  • Interviewing Michelle Obama as editor-in-chief of Seventeen magazine South Africa

  • Managing a first-on-the-continent social media and response management team for Coca-Cola South Africa

  • Contributing to the growth of SMMEs through my brand and content marketing business, TRUE Content

  • Interviewing Rihanna for Media24 women’s magazines

  • Being named one of the 200 Young People to take to lunch by Mail & Guardian
